The Latin-American Music Review has published another of my articles on Guastavino.  Here's the citation:  Jonathan Kulp.  "Carlos Guastavino: A Re-evaluation of His Harmonic Language."  Latin-American Music Review 27/2 (Fall/Winter 2006): 196-219.

Cantabile en Cuerdas Releases CD with Kulp songs.

The guitar-and-voice duo Cantabile en Cuerdas of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has released a CD that includes my song cycle Canciones para niños (all nine songs!  Thanks!).  The duo is Rosana Risé (soprano) and Sergio Moldavsky (guitar).  See cover image below.   Rosana's voice is probably better suited for these songs than any other I've heard.  The recording is superb.  To hear samples, visit the Canciones page.

Kulp at GFA

I gave a presentation on my works for voice and guitar at this year's Guitar Foundation of America convention, along with tenor-guitarist Matthew Hinsley, who performed some of my songs live for me (thanks!).  I was also a judge in the qualifying round of the GFA competition, something that was  a bit tiring but also a really good experience.  It was a great time seeing a lot of old friends from the guitar world: Rusty Jones, Tony Lanman, Matt Hinsley, Andrew Zohn, Randall Avers and more.  Here's a photo from lunch at The Feve (great place!) on the final day in Oberlin.

Dickinson songs performed in "Harvest of Song" concerts in Berkeley, CA

Three songs from Five Poems of Emily Dickinson (2002) were performed at the "Harvest of Song" concerts in Berkeley, California, on October 30 and 31.   The performers were baritone and composer Allen Shearer (also artistic director of Composers, Inc.) and guitarist Marc Teicholz (GFA winner, faculty at San Francisco Conservatory).  Many thanks to Allen and Marc!

Dickinson songs featured in recital at Ottawa International Festival

My song cycle Five Poems of Emily Dickinson (2002) was featured in a recital by mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah and guitarist Daniel Bolshoy on August 5, 2004 at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and the two plan to keep the cycle in the repertoire for the coming year.  Thanks guys!

Lorca songs recorded in Buenos Aires

My song cycle Canciones para niños has been in the repertoire of soprano Rosana Risé and guitarist Sergio Moldavsky of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and they in November 2004 they went into the studio to record the songs.  The CD should be released in the summer of 2005.  These excellent artists are both professors at the Conservatorio Superior de Música 'Manuel de Falla' in Buenos Aires.  Muchísimas gracias a los dos.

LAMR Article Published

My article entitled "Carlos Guastavino: The Intersection of música culta and música popular in Argentine Song," appears in the Latin-American Music Review/Revista de música latinoamericana, vol. 24, no. 1 (Spring 2003): 42-61.  This is based on one of the chapters in my dissertation, and it deals with Guastavino's amazing success in the realms of both art music and popular music.  Many thanks to my mentor Gerard Béhague, editor of the journal, for including the article in this latest issue.

Soundboard Feature

My song "Caracola" ("Seashell") was published in the Winter 2003 issue of Soundboard magazine (journal of the Guitar Foundation of America), along with a nice photograph and profile of me, as part of "The GFA Contemporary Music Series."  If you're interested in seeing the article, you can probably find Soundboard at places like Tower Records and better music stores everywhere.  Thanks to Soundboard editors Richard and Mary Long for their interest in my music and for putting it in the magazine.
